Muddled Citrus Scarlet Berry Brew

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Step inside my cozy tavern, where the air hums with warmth and the scent of spiced fruit drifts through flickering candlelight. Tonight’s brew is one to awaken the spirit and soothe the soul — a Muddled Citrus Scarlet Berry Brew, crafted from tart cranberries, ruby pomegranate, and fragrant herbs kissed by winter’s chill. Each sip sparkles with life, a balance of tang and sweetness that feels like sunshine through stained glass. Whether you’re warming your hands by the hearth or seeking a touch of magic to brighten a long night, this crimson elixir is sure to revive both heart and spirit.

This vibrant brew shines brightest in the colder months — from late autumn through winter — when cranberries, pomegranates, and citrus are at their peak. It’s a festive favorite around Samhain, Yule, and the Winter Solstice, when hearths burn bright and hearts crave something both grounding and revitalizing. The deep scarlet hue and warming spices make it a natural fit for holiday gatherings, cozy nights in, or as a non-alcoholic “tavern tonic” to toast the turning of the seasons. Its ingredients also lend a touch of ritual — cranberries for protection, pomegranate for vitality, and citrus for cleansing energy — making it as magical as it is delicious.

This was inspired by my Fairy Berry Punch, check it out!

Ingredients

~*~*~**~* see recipe card for quantities ~**~**~*

  • fresh cranberries
  • pomegranate seeds
  • fresh rosemary (or basil)
  • blood oranges
  • brewed hibiscus tea, chilled
  • sparkling or coconut water
  • honey or maple syrup
  • small cinnamon stick

Instructions

  1. Slice your blood oranges, and grab your ingredients. Place in a sturdy glass or mortar.
  1. Muddle the cranberries, pomegranate, basil, and orange slices until the juices release.

3. Pour in the chilled hibiscus tea and honey (if using), and stir until blended. Strain if you’d like a smoother potion, or leave it rustic with the muddled fruit.Add ice and top with sparkling or coconut water. Garnish with a basil leaf and floating cranberry.

Hint: For the best flavor, lightly bruise the herbs before muddling — it releases their natural oils and deepens the brew’s aroma. If you’re using rosemary, run the sprig between your fingers first to awaken its piney scent. And for an extra wintry touch, warm the hibiscus tea before pouring for a soothing, hearth-side version of this scarlet potion.

  • Small strainer (optional, for a smoother drink)

  • knife & cutting board for slicing citrus

Ingredients

  • ½ cup fresh cranberries
  • ¼ cup pomegranate seeds
  • 1 sprig fresh rosemary or 2-3 fresh basil leaves for a sweeter taste
  • ½ blood orange plus more for garnishing
  • 1 cup brewed hibiscus tea chilled
  • ½ cup sparkling or coconut water
  • 1-2 tsp honey or maple syrup
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • ice

Instructions

Storage

This brew is best enjoyed fresh, while the fruit and herbs are vibrant and aromatic. However, you can store any leftover mixture (without the sparkling or coconut water added) in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. When ready to serve, strain if desired, pour over ice, and top with fresh sparkling or coconut water for that signature fizz.

FAQ

Can I make it warm instead of iced?

Absolutely. Skip the ice and sparkling water, and pour the muddled mixture into warm hibiscus tea for a cozy, spiced winter version.

Can I add alcohol?

For an adult tavern twist, a splash of gin, vodka, or sparkling wine pairs beautifully with the fruity base — but it’s equally magical without.
